And if you do dress up, what kind of costume should you wear?
Listen to the Disney Travel Style Podcast
The Halloween season at Walt Disney World and Disneyland is a very fun time of year. Disney Parks really go all out for Halloween, with seasonal décor, treats, food, special Halloween-themed shows and even spooky ride overlays at Disneyland Resort (unfortunately, Walt Disney World doesn’t do the same). With all of the Halloween hoopla, it’s not surprising that many Disney guests embrace the spirit of Halloween with by adding a little extra magic in their outfits.
But should you dress up for Disney Halloween?
Are You Going to a Disney Halloween Party?
While some Disney Park guests do dress up a little during Halloween, it’s really only during the Halloween parties (Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and the Halloweentime Oogie Boogie Bash) that you’ll see a big number of guests dressing up in their favorite Halloween costumes.
Many kids dress up for their Disney vacations all year long (princesses, Star Wars characters, Marvel characters etc.), but adults are truly allowed to go full costume only during the Halloween season (yes, there is a dress code specifically for this).
Will You Feel Out of Place if You Don’t Dress Up for Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or Oogie Boogie Bash?
The answer is no. You won’t feel out of place at all.
Many children and teens dress up, as do many adults. But not everyone dresses up for Disney Halloween. Far from it. So you won’t feel out of place if you don’t dress up. You won’t be alone as there are quite a few guests who don’t wear costumes to the Disney Halloween parties (and you won’t be chastised either).
Costume Considerations for Disney Halloween Parties
If you do want to dress up for a Disney Halloween party, what kind of costume should you wear?
The costume that you wear to Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party or the Oogie Boogie Bash will really come down to why you want to dress up in the first place. If you want to dress up so that you can really get into the spirit and be fully immersive, then by all means you can go all out with your costume (within Disney dress code guidelines).
Cast Members will often acknowledge great costumes and you’ll certainly be able to get some great photos in the Halloween vibe. But, going all out on a costume can come at the cost of comfort, maneuverability and the ability to easily ride rides (depending on the costume).
If you want to dress up to be in the spirit of the event, but not make it overcomplicated, then the next (and probably most common approach) is to strike a balance between dressing up (you’ll see a lot of Disney bounding in this category), without having your costume become too extravagant.
The last two approaches are to:
a) wear a themed DIsney-inspired Halloween t-shirt, or
b) not dress up at all.
Both of these will allow you to enjoy the party to enjoy the ambiance, sights and sounds of the event without a restrictive costume.
In either case, you won’t be out of place if you’re not in costume, as you certainly won’t be the only one.
