Does Disney Have a Dress Code for Guests?

The Answer is Yes and You Can Be Denied Entry to Disney Parks if You Violate the Disney Dress Code

Packing for a Disney vacation isn't just about what to wear for the weather or fashion, there's also a fairly detailed Disney dress code that you need to know about.

“Can I wear this to Walt Disney World?”

This is a common question for some Disney guests. If you’re wondering if an article of clothing may be too close to crossing a line, or may be too risque for a Disney Park, then that should be a sign to just pick something else. That thought aside, you don’t have to guess. Thankfully, there is a written Disney dress code to help guide the way for your Disney vacation.

What You Can and Can’t Wear on Your Walt Disney World Vacation

Choosing your wardrobe for a Walt Disney World vacation is part of the pre-vacation fun prior to your departure day. But along with choosing clothing based on weather and time of year, there is another set of guidelines that covers clothing that you cannot wear in Disney Parks and on the Resort property

Part 1: Disney Parks are Family Parks, So Dress Accordingly

Disney’s dress code for Walt Disney World (and Disneyland) begins with a general statement:

Proper attire, including shoes and shirts, must be worn at all times. The parks are a casual, family-oriented environment. Ensuring that the parks are family-friendly is an important part of the Disney experience. In that spirit, we ask you to use your discretion and common sense.

This part of the Disney Dress Code is a reminder that Disney aims to protect its reputation as a wholesome family destination. By comparison, if you have a local non-Disney theme park near you, then you might know what it’s like to see certain attire that would never make it past the front entrance of a Disney Park.

If you’re wondering if a certain top or shorts are acceptable to wear to a Disney Park, ask yourself if you’d consider that outfit to be family friendly. That’s how Disney Cast Members will view it as you approach the front gate. It doesn’t happen too often (most Disney guests appreciate the family friendly nature of the parks), but I have seen a guest refused entry for wearing an offensive shirt, at the front gate of the Magic Kingdom.

The Walt Disney World Theme Parks Dress Code and Guidelines

The next part of the Walt Disney World dress code gets a little more specific about what you cannot wear into the parks.

Part 2: Inappropriate Attire for Walt Disney World Parks

While enforcing the rules is left to the discretion of Cast Members, there are some specific guidelines that they follow when applying these rules.

The Walt Disney World Dress Code clearly and plainly states that Cast Members can refuse entry, or kick you out of the park, if you are wearing anything that is inappropriate or that could detract from the experience of other guests.

Specifically, the Disney dress code states:

Attire that is not appropriate for the parks—and which may result in refusal of admittance—includes, but is not limited to:

  • Costumes and costume masks, which may not be worn by Guests 14 years of age or older.

Costume Exceptions*:

  • Specific Halloween and Christmas events

  • Some outfits inspired by Star Wars.

  • Clothing with objectionable material, including obscene language or graphics

  • Excessively torn clothing

  • Clothing which, by nature, exposes excessive portions of the skin that may be viewed as inappropriate for a family environment

  • Clothing that touches or drags on the ground

  • Clothing with multiple layers is subject to search upon entry

  • Objectionable tattoos

* Note that Disney ticketed parties and events have their own specific dress codes, as does Galaxy’s Edge. So be sure to check those as well.

There are also general rules that apply to the entire Walt Disney World property. They include clothing, but go far beyond just clothing.  You can find the Walt Disney World Property Rules here.

For the most part, Disneyland Resort in California has the exact same set of rules and regulations posted on its website.
