Disney Travel Style Questions: This or That?
Listen to the audio podcast for the full discussion, but the following is a summary of our recommendations for each This or That.
1. This or That? In the Disney Parks: A Subtle Disney Shirt or Obvious Disney Shirt.
Subtle Disney shirt is our top pick for this one and here’s why. Your obvious Disney shirts are great to wear back home when you're not on vacation at a Disney resort. While on vacation, subtle Disney shirts are a great way to go to be a little more unique and not wearing what everyone else is wearing.
Plus, Disney Cast Members seem to appreciate seeing subtle Disney shirts that they don't see every day (and they may even comment or offer a little extra magic). Read more about subtle Disney clothes.
What about outside the Parks?
Outside the parks on a Disney vacation, subtle Disney shirts are still a top pick.
2. This or That? What to wear to a casual dinner (such as the Grand Floridian Café): casual shorts/leggings or a dress?
Amelia notes that a dress is a great option for women, as it's a little more, well, dressy.
This or That? for men: nice casual shorts and a short sleeve button up shirt, or pants and casual dress shirt?
For men, Mike picks casual shorts and a short-sleeve button shirt as a great choice that can also be worn for many other occasions on your vacation (including park days).
3. This or That? When visiting the Disney Parks: a hat or Disney ears?
Disney ears are the winner here, because there really aren't many other places that you can really wear Disney ears and feel confident about it. However, if you need to wear a hat for other reasons, than see #4.
4. This or That? When wearing a hat in Disney Parks: a ball cap or wide brim hat?
A ball cap is the more functional choice here, especially if you go on a lot of fast moving rides. Ball caps can be stowed and stored far more easily than brimmed hats. But, Amelia notes that you may get a ball-cap tanline (if you don’t wear these often and you're concerned about that sort of thing).
A wide brimmed hat will offer more sun protection, can be more fashionable and is a good choice if you don't go on fast rides where you don’t have to worry about stuffing it into a gear stowage compartment.
5. This or That? For Walt Disney World in cooler weather: jeans or leggings?
While there is a bit of an anti-jeans sentiment out there among some Disney travelers (who feel jeans have no place in a Disney Park), Amelia still feels that leggings or loose casual pants are a better way to go. In addition to jeans potentially being less comfortable, it’s worth considering that jeans are less also less forgiving around the waistline (if you plan to enjoy a Disney snack or two…or three).
6. This or That? For Disney Parks in cooler weather: a hoodie or sweatshirt?
This one's a close one and Amelia notes that this choice can depend on whether or not the hoodie is zip-up or a pullover (zip ups offer more flexibility).
Still, the crew neck sweatshirt gets a slight edge here for comfort and functionality as a hood could bother you a bit on some rides.
7. This or That? For walking the Disney Parks: Flat-Sole Shoes (like Converse Chuck Taylor’s) or running shoes/sneakers?
The answer is split on this one.
Amelia recommends sneakers or tennis shoes, while Mike prefers his Converse All-Stars. Your best bet here is to go with what is most comfortable for you in other long-walk situations.
8. This or That? A cotton t-shirt or a button-up short-sleeve shirt for a day in a Disney Park?
Mike recommends a short-sleeve button-up shirt over the t-shirt. Mainly because button-up shirts are looser fitting and less hot than even a light cotton t-shirt. Plus, the short-sleeve button up shirt is more flexible for both a day in the parks and table service dining.
9. This or That? Which fabric is best for Disney Parks: cotton or linen?
When it comes to the fabric of your top, which is cotton or linen a better choice? Assuming the best quality of both items, linen is the top pick here for both Mike and Amelia.
10. This or That? If you need to carry a bag in a Disney Park: a backpack or sling bag/crossbody?
For easy access and less bulk, the crossbody or sling bag is the the top pick here.
Amelia notes that small backpacks were more popular and trendy 10 years ago and in addition they are not as accessible from a pure practical usage perspective. So unless you need a large backpack for utility reasons (like carrying a lot of items for small kids), our recommendation is to go with the more flexible crossbody type of bag.
