Rope Dropping has been a cherished tradition for experienced Disney travelers since 1971. In fact, Rope Dropping a theme park is the only significant Disney travel tip that’s stood the test of time. For over 50 years, rope dropping is as beneficial today as it was when the Magic Kingdom first opened at Walt Disney World in Orlando on October 1, 1971.

What is Disney Rope Dropping?

Rope Dropping simply means getting to the park entrance before the park is open. If you are at the park gates before they first open for the day, then you will be among the first guests into the park and this gives you a huge advantage over other guests. Why is it called rope drop? To this day there are still ropes used inside Magic Kingdom and other parks, that are dropped to allow entry to different lands.

Even though the rope drop show at the main entrance of Magic Kingdom has evolved and changed over the years, the benefits of the strategy have only increased in significance. Rope dropping is beneficial at all four Walt Disney World parks, not just Magic Kingdom.

If you’re wondering what is the best strategy to get on as many Disney rides as possible with the shortest wait times, rope drop is the way to go. Forget about paying for quicker access and all the rest.

If you get to a park for rope drop, then you’ll be able to do more in the first two hours than many guests who arrive later in the day will be able to do all day. It’s definitely a benefit to get up early for rope drop, which is why staying on site at a Disney resort hotel also helps in this case.

Don’t Let the Crowds Throw You

If you’ve never rope dropped before, the first time that you arrive for rope drop, you might be a little shocked by what you see.

Crowds of people.

Don’t be put off though, that large crowd of people awaiting entry may look huge, but it doesn’t translate into long lines immediately (with a few exceptions).

What actually happens is that when the rope first drops (meaning, they start to let you in) at the front gates of a Disney theme park, the crowds disperse in different directions heading to different rides and attractions in different areas. So odd are that you will still see much shorter-than-normal lines no matter where you go.

The only exception is that when a brand new big ticket ride opens, a large number of guests may head to ride. You’ll still be ahead of the game with rope drop, but it may take up the time of any two other rides in the park. With the increasing popularity of virtual queues by Disney, however, this has been eliminated to some degree with respect to rope drop.
